Successful remakes - House of Cards (2013)

Successful remakes - House of Cards (2013)

Almost every year old successful formulas are polished and revitalized. In many cases they are doomed to fail, which threatens to overshadow successful attempts. Time to highlight the successful remakes.
When it comes to remakes I'm always a bit hesitant. When you see the end product, you as a viewer are often disappointed. Sometimes it is due to too high expectations or the makers of the remake do not handle the source material carefully. Why do you need to change or repeat something that is good and where has the creativity in this industry gone? Just come up with something new! Yet remakes can also turn out well. With the right makers and respect for the original, true gems can be created. The third successful remake that I would like to highlight is House of Cards (2013).

House of Cards (2013)

Another series that I didn't know had an original series behind it. Most, like me, will know House of Cards (2013) as one of the first original Netflix series. Before we met the legendary Frank Underwood, there was the British political drama series House of Cards with the corrupt Prime Minister Francis Urquhart. The 1990 British series is based on the books by Michael Dobbs. Although the British series is not nearly as well known as the American remake, the reviews are very strong. A Prime Minister who is careful, appears terrifying and has a deadly charm provides sufficient material to create the iconic character of Frank Underwood.

In the American House of Cards (2013) you meet Frank Underwood. He is a reckless politician and is willing to die to achieve his goals. When he is passed over by the newly elected president, he decides to take revenge. With his wife Claire Underwood by his side, he seems more combative than ever. After all, he wants to become president himself and therefore decides to leak all Washington's political secrets.

Despite actor Kevin Spacey's personal situation, we cannot deny that he is a phenomenal actor. The great success of House of Cards (2013) can be entirely attributed to Kevin Spacey's fantastic performance as Frank Underwood. It is a complex character where the qualities of ruthless, manipulative, charismatic and intimidating apply. Frank Underwood is a master of political intrigue and a symbol of corruption and lust for power. Kevin Spacey has mastered every feature down to the last detail. This combined with the chemistry and dynamics between Kevin and Robin Wright as Claire Underwood makes House of Cards (2013) a fabulous series.

House of Cards (2013)

The American remake has managed to distinguish itself from the original in several areas. The characters in the remake, especially Frank and Claire Underwood, were given more depth and complexity. The series explored their personal and political ambitions in a more detailed way. In addition, House of Cards (2013) responded to the contemporary political atmosphere in the United States, making it relevant and compelling for a broader audience. Finally, breaking the fourth wall was an important addition. Frank Underwood speaks directly to the viewer, taking the viewer into his thoughts and revealing his plans. This creates a closer bond between the character and the audience. These elements made the remake of House of Cards (2013) a groundbreaking series that achieved both critical and commercial success.

House of Cards (2013) is one of Netflix's first original series and one season was released all at once, making binge-watching possible and introducing a new way of watching TV. The first few seasons were very good. Unfortunately, the quality started to decline in the later seasons and the sixth and final season without leading actor Kevin Spacey was very disappointing. Despite the course of this series, it remains an iconic series and has been a founder of the way we watch series today. House of Cards (2013) also scores highly among the members of MySeries. Given the rave reviews, I conclude that House of Cards (2013) has become a successful remake.

Absolutely a rock solid series. Have watched four seasons so far, all great. The entire cast (a lot of familiar faces if you watch a lot of series) delivers top work. If I understand correctly, season five is the last with Kevin Spacey. Well, when I watch that season, I will definitely sit down for it :)

I knew there was an English first version. But I haven't seen either. Still a nice column :-)

And about Kevin Spacey, let's not forget that the man has never been convicted of anything. In fact, he was completely acquitted last year.

The original was on Netflix years ago and I saw this one then too, but that was almost 10 years ago now. I remember that I thought it was a really cool series, also a lot more compact than the remake (12 episodes instead of 73 is quite a difference). But yes, it was the 90s and it was British, so it all looked a bit dusty.

How was the end of Kevin Spacy in this series? Was it handled properly or did he just leave/die/get kidnapped etc. without any fuss?

I have to be honest, I stopped watching this show when I heard they fired Kevin Spacey without any evidence.

I would definitely not watch the sixth season. If you want to know why you can read my review of that season (https://www.mijnserie.nl/house_of_cards_2013/recensie/2445/house-of-cards-2013-seizoen-6-roeman/). The fifth season ends really excellently and that should have been it. For the rest, I will definitely watch this series up to and including season 5. It is more than worth it, if only for the acting of Spacey and Wright, the truly fantastic breaking of the fourth wall, the dialogues and character development.
