The Art of the Intro - #1

The Art of the Intro - #1

The impact of a good intro is often underestimated. It can be one of the most memorable aspects of a series. These five masterful intros set the tone, engage the senses, and remain eternally recognizable.
A series intro is more than a beginning; it’s an experience. A good intro instantly transports you into the world of the show, lets you feel the tone, and evokes emotions that linger long afterward. Some intros are so iconic that they’re the first thing you think of.

In this first column I pay tribute to - in my opinion - five unforgettable series intros. They are memorable, recognizable and worth repeating. Do you share my opinion?

Stargate SG-1
Video on youtube

An epic intro that perfectly matches the journey of discovery through the universe. The music by composer Joel Goldsmith is grand and sweeping, and the editing takes you along the stars and symbols that fans will immediately recognize. The intro is a powerful tribute to the science fiction genre and makes you immediately ready to travel through the stars.

For me, this is a very important series, mainly because I grew up with science fiction and largely with Stargate SG-1. Just imagine, young children elsewhere still watched Sesame Street (which I refused) and I was looking forward to Stargate. So I can just dream the intro. Oh, how I still hope for a successful reboot of Stargate SG-1. Or a sequel. Something! Ideally in the same universe and therefore with existing characters, because the actors and actresses were really perfectly cast.

Dexter
Video on youtube

Macabre, mundane and brilliant: the intro of Dexter is a masterpiece in telling a story in one minute. From the ritual of a shave to the cutting of a blood orange, the intro interweaves Dexter's daily life with his dark side. The music of Rolfe Kent completes the whole with an ironic cheerfulness.

A series that I have watched in its entirety more recently. I had always heard of Dexter, but the genre and the plot did not seem very interesting to me. How wrong I was. A great series with another intro that I have never skipped. In the meantime, it seems that Dexter is building a fairly successful franchise with several sequels that seem to maintain the same level of quality - even the ending was qualitatively just as good...

The Sopranos
Video on youtube

With 'Woke Up This Morning' by Alabama 3, The Sopranos sets a rock-solid tone. Tony Soprano drives through New Jersey, cigar in hand, while the images of the city contrast with the dark life he leads. The intro is a visual and musical introduction that perfectly reflects the raw authenticity of the series.

Technically, this series is illegally present in this list, because I have never seen it. The mafia genre has never really convinced me and I have also always skipped films like The Godfather - which I often still have to hear about. Nevertheless, this intro already gives you a good idea of what the series is about without giving too much away. Maybe it is time for me to add this series to my watchlist.

That 70's Show
Video on youtube

Energy, fun and nostalgia burst from the screen in this iconic intro. As the cast sings along to Cheap Trick's 'In the Street', you're immediately in the relaxed atmosphere of the seventies. The intro takes you back to an era full of simplicity and rebellion - a perfect opening for a series that revolves around friendship and youthful excesses.

Another series that always makes me a little nostalgic. Even though I wasn't around in the 70s myself, I still feel like I got a taste of it thanks to That 70s Show. I don't think I ever watched this series in the correct chronological order when I was younger, and yet I could never get enough of it. That's why I think it's a shame that That '90s Show wasn't exactly a success. Hello Wisconsin!

Rome
Video on youtube

With a combination of intriguing visuals and epic music, Rome’s intro immediately draws you into history. The animation style combines classical symbolism with a modern edge, and Jeff Beal’s soundtrack builds suspense as the past comes to life. A majestic opening that reflects the grandeur and intrigue of ancient Rome.

Like many, I have a keen interest in the ancient Roman Empire. And I think this series may have been the instigator of that. As far as I’m concerned, there is still no series with the same subject matter that has surpassed Rome. Considering the series was released in 2005-2007, that certainly says something.

What makes these five intros so strong? For me, it's the balance between music, imagery, and emotion. They not only set the tone for the episode, but also leave an indelible impression. Which series intro do you think belongs on this list? Let us know in the comments below and who knows, it might be featured next time!

Nice column, Mike. I also never skip an intro, because they often look fantastic. The one from Dexter is absolutely my favorite of these five examples that you provide. The combination of the images and the music is perfectly chosen. An intro that immediately comes to mind is of course Game of Thrones. When I watched that series, I even heard the intro music in my sleep. I also thought the one from Wednesday was well done, you are immediately in the atmosphere of the series. The music is by Danny Elfman. The one from Only Murders in the Building is also still fun, Good Omens, Yellowjackets, Stranger Things is very well done, Daredevil, True Blood, Mad Men, The Walking Dead, Animal Kingdom, oh there are so many feats of genius when it comes to intros.

I think it's a big certainty that Game of Thrones will be in the next column ;)

Very nice examples! I didn't know some of them myself, like True Blood and Animal Kingdom, but I totally get you!

Nice to read this! A good intro can grab you or (and sometimes also a little bit over the line to go and watch.)

Intros that I am a big fan of are His Dark Materials (the images and the music actually tell the whole story in a very subtle way), Detectorists (the song from that intro is still in my Spotify wrapped every year) and Ripper Street (an intro that you actually want to last longer). And I also agree with Dave

I found His Dark Materials... a bit long-winded. But I'm in the minority, I know - the intro was indeed very cool!

I watched it right away and I have to say, despite everything exploding, it actually calms me down - cool intro!

If I'm completely honest, I often skip the intros. Especially when I'm binging. But this is a brilliant idea for a column, Mike :-)
Of the above, I have of course seen SG1 and that intro is the one I remember best. I have also seen Rome, but I did not watch the intro of every episode.
I have a few that I always watch:

I always watch and listen to the intro of Miami Vice, with the music of Jan Hammer and the images of Miami and Miami Beach, all the way through. When those flamingos appear on screen, I'm already completely into it:

Another favorite is "Space, the final frontier, these are the voyages of..." with the fantastic music of Alexander Courage. This is a classic intro with few images, but with the Enterprise swooshing past at warp speed. When I saw this in the past, my evening was completely good again:

And I also love the Game of Thrones intro. The music is a classic and epic. The intro images were regularly adjusted to what had happened or was going to happen. Once I was visiting something abroad and there was a string band playing this tune in the courtyard. I could hear it from far away :-) This is the version of the first season.

There are more, like the opening song of Tru Calling: Somebody Help Me by Full Blown Rose. And I know more earworms, but for now this is enough :-D

haha - each to their own. To be honest, when I watch a series with friends, they usually skip the intros too.

Unless they are really really good..... And yes, Star Trek - for me the intro is of course mainly known from Next Generation and more recently also Strange New Worlds, but the original certainly has a certain charm. For the time it was also really top quality.

The idea is that there will be plenty more of these columns to come, so don't worry - plenty of opportunities! :)

Nice column, well described.
Discovered a lot of music through theme songs.
Justified, Shameless US, Strike back, Peaky Blinders and of course Luther are a few, of the many, that really stand out to me.

Nice examples! One of these will also be in the next column, but I'll leave out which one for now ;)

Indeed a very nice column, of which the one about Rome is absolutely my favorite of these five examples that you provide.

For me, visually and cinematically, the intro of Game of Thrones is pure perfection. The building music of Ramin Djawadi, the impressive 3D map that unfolds, and the detail that the map adapts to the episode, everything is right. No series has ever put me in the right mood before the first scene even starts.

Agreed, for me one of the best intros ever and actually I can already imagine this intro when the HBO letters appear on the screen.

HBO is quality anyway and I think we will see many more HBO series in this column series.

The intro of Yellowstone also clearly shows what it is about. I also find House of cards strong because of the music.

Nice topic btw 👍

Nice column! Especially considering the reactions that follow.

There are so many good intros these days that it's hard to pick a favorite. Think Banshee, The Americans, Game of Thrones, The Leftovers, the 5(!) different intro versions of The Wire, and that's just to name a few! I can enjoy every single one of these intros.

I also skip intros sometimes, but only if I have the option. I often don't use streaming services to watch the series and then it's easier to let the intro do its thing than when I have to fast forward.
I can now also dream the intro of House of Cards. That is the series I just finished. And yes, I skipped season 6.

I think of intros like Suits, The Good Fight, Peaky Blinders, Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, All Creatures Great and Small, Sherlock Holmes, Criminal Minds and The Affair. There are so many really good intros, think of The Morning Show, since then B. Clementine is always on my playlist ;)

Very nice subject to write about! I can completely agree with the above mentioned intros. The one that comes to mind as the odd one out is that of Peacemaker. The cast that performs a choreography with a serious face to a nice song I thought was very nicely conceived and I didn't skip it once.

Looking forward to the next column :)
