Looking back at Holloway’s career, you see a man who comes from the modeling world. His first acting is in a music video. And not just any video! He plays in Aerosmith’s ‘Cryin’. His first appearances on the small screen are modest. In series like Angel and Walker, Texas Ranger he appears as the handsome boy who usually doesn’t make it to the end of the episode. Not that anyone really stumbled over that — Holloway probably served mainly as eye candy.
After guest roles in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, The Lyon’s Den, NCIS and Good Girls Don’t… his big breakthrough came with Lost. Holloway plays the role of James ‘Sawyer’ Ford. He is the sarcastic survivor with a tough past and a six-pack, who knows how to bluff his way out of any situation with half a word. A role that makes perfect use of his charisma. Holloway and Lost were a golden combination for six seasons — even when some people had completely lost the thread of the story.
The end of Lost means Holloway starts a search for a number of new projects, with a different atmosphere and tone. He makes a one-off appearance in Community and plays in Yo Gabba Gabba! In between, he also does some work in films, with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol as his most appealing work.
It is the series Intelligence (2014) with which he returns to the small screen. Holloway plays a super agent with a microchip in his head. The series is a kind of Jason Bourne meets Google Glass, but does not always get much further than Holloway staring at a computer screen with a very serious look. Intelligence (2014) is - not entirely unexpectedly - canceled after one season.
With Colony Holloway has an unexpected hit. The science fiction series offers Holloway a chance to show his more serious side. The apocalyptic setting and political undertones of Colony combined with pleasant action are appreciated by the viewer.
After a recurring supporting role in the very strong Yellowstone (2018), preceded by appearances in Amazing Stories (2020), it is now time for Duster. Holloway seems to have found a series that combines his style and flair. He plays Jim Ellis, a man with baggage, who drives faster than his past can catch up with him. Holloway does this with visible pleasure. And be honest: Josh Holloway behind the wheel of a classic getaway car that puts the pedal to the metal? You would blindly step in for that!
