Awards: Best Series of 2016

This column is intended to give some extra information regarding the nomination of Best Series of 2016. From Thursday, 5 January until Saturday, 4 February you can vote for your favourite series in this category.

Which series is the best series of 2016? Will Game of Thrones take the throne two years in a row or will The Walking Dead, Narcos or House of Cards (2013) have the honour this year? It is up to the readers of MySeries to cast their votes, it's up to me to compile the list of nominations this year.

And that was more difficult than expected. Homeland, Sherlock, Penoza, Fargo, Downton Abbey and Luther were all high on my list, but unfortunately all these series were not broadcast in 2016. So how did I arrive at this list? I looked at the top 50 on MySeries and then I went hunting on the web for reviews, comments, ratings and other websites with series and statistics.

And in doing so, I found a lot of differences. Top-rated series or most popular series, there's quite a difference. For instance, Game Of Thrones is the most popular as it gets ten out of ten points. But it only scores four out of ten when looking at the top-rated series. Arrow and The Flash (2014) are both in the top 10 most popular series, but aren't anywhere to be found in the top 50 of best-rated series.

Of course it could only be series that aired in 2016 and I had to omit my personal preferences. This resulted in a top 10. I tried to choose as fairly as possible among all series that have been released in 2016. In addition, I have tried to avoid nominating the same series selected in categories like new, Dutch / Flemish and binge-worthy series as much as possible.
