Drama series Birthright in development at Netflix

Birthright, a soapy family drama project from Women of the Movement and Black Cake creator Marissa Jo Cerar, has landed on Netflix.
In Birthright, written by Cerar, journalist Maya James is stunned when she becomes heir to one of the largest and most profitable liquor companies in America, but it's a gift that turns her life upside down as she uncovers the many secrets her benefactors have buried.

Netflix was in a competitive situation with a significant development deal, sources have learned. Aaron Kaplan's Kapital Entertainment, where Cerar (pictured) is under an overall deal, is the studio.

Cerar is producing alongside Kapital's Kaplan, Brian Morewitz and head of production Michael Lohmann.

This is the third major project for Cerar under her deal at Kapital, following Women of the Movement, which debuted on ABC in 2022, and Black Cake, which premiered on Hulu in November. The fate of the latter has yet to be officially confirmed by the Disney streamer.

This marks a return to Netflix for Cerar, who previously worked on the global streamer's series 13 Reasons Why. Her previous writing work also includes Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, Freeform's The Fosters (2013), and Fox's Shots Fired.
