Witch trails of 'Salem' new WGN series

WGN America has ordered a 13 episodes drama series ‘Salem’ and with that order WGN marks the first original scripted series for WGN America.

Set in the volatile world of 17th century Massachusetts, ‘Salem’ explores what really fueled the town’s infamous witch trials and dares to uncover the dark, supernatural truth hiding behind the veil of this heinous period in American history. In 'Salem' witches are real, but they are not who or what they seem. The show, which centers on an epic romance wrapped around this explosive revelation, delivers a bold new vision of ‘Salem’ – and an even bolder new vision of witches.

Shane West ('Nikita') will play the male lead John Alden, a hardened veteran of 10 years of war and captivity at the hands of the Indians. He returns to his native Salem to find it consumed in witch hunt frenzy.

The cast also includes Janet Montgomery ('Made in Jersey') as sorceress Mary Sibley, Seth Gabel ('Fringe', 'Arrow') as Cotton Mather, a local aristocrat who oversees the witch hunts, and Ashley Madekwe ('Revenge') as Mary’s alluring and ageless right-hand woman. Tamzin Merchant ('The Tudors') co-stars as the beautiful Anne Hale, a talented artist who is attracted to Alden, unaware of his history with Mary Sibley.

Salem, from 'Star Trek' vet Brannon Braga, is scheduled to debut in spring 2014

WGN America released a teaser of its first TV show.
