Law & Order: SVU will have a spin-off

NBC has announced that a Law & Order: SVU spin-off is in the works. The main story will revolve around Elliot Stabler, portrayed by Christopher Meloni.
Long-running crime series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit will have a spin-off. The Peacock network has ordered a thirteen-episode season and Christopher Meloni (photo) will portray the lead character. The spin-off is the first series to be made after Dick Wolfe signed a five-year contract with Universal Television last February.

Last February, Law & Order: SVU was already renewed for another three seasons. Meloni portrayed Detective Elliot Stabler in Law & Order: SVU since 1999. In 2011, he suddenly departed from the series, which saddened a great amount of fans. He then starred in True Blood, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, Underground and The Handmaid's Tale. In 2014, he portrayed the lead character in Surviving Jack and in 2017 he also starred in the main role in the comedy Happy!

In the spin-off, the cynical Elliot Stabler will lead the organised crime department. It is currently not known when the new series, which still has to receive a name, will start production or when its set to premiere.

Mariska Hargitay congratulated her former colleague on his birthday and return to the Law & Order family.
