Watched two episodes (Amazon Prime) and was pleasantly struck by the excellent acting of Sissy Spacek - known for her role in 'Carrie' (1976 / Brian de Palma) - and JK Simmons (Spider-Man, Law and Order eva). Of course, I still have to see the remaining 6 episodes of this season to make an informed final judgement, but it is mysterious and makes me curious about the sequel. I won't reveal anything else about the content, the synopsis of this series that can be found on the My Series site tells more than enough. Recommended for now. I'll give it an 8 for now and will come back if I think differently about it.

I found this series captivating from the first to the last minute despite the slowness and despite the series being more drama and mystery with a bit of science fiction. The end of season 1 leaves me wanting more personally and I also really enjoyed this first season.

Let me start with the most positive. The cast, especially Spacek and Simmons, play great (pun intended). But unfortunately that is not enough to create a catchy and exciting series. From the first moment it is indicated that there is a strange, supernatural or alien room in their garden that seems to lead to another planet. Exciting! I'd like to see that story. However, that's not what it's about at all. Yes, the room is there and yes, they find someone there. But the focus is mainly on a family drama about two older people who slowly start to deteriorate and deal with a huge tragedy in their past. The room helps in their processing, but has no clear function in the story (yet). Then the story moves to Argentina where a mother and daughter are given an assignment to fulfill. That story becomes more clear about the possible function of the room, but there too it is mainly drama. A rebellious teenage daughter and a mother who keeps quiet too much. The promised SF part of the story is poorly delivered, especially in the first half of the season. The fact that I continued to watch is mainly due to the fact that the entire series is available in one go. If I had had to wait a week each time, I don't know whether I would have continued watching. But now every time there was just that little bit of curiosity and the availability of the next episode to keep it going. And in addition, the acting is of such a level that watching it was not a punishment. Towards the end of the season, the story finally gains some momentum and some, but certainly not all, answers are provided. The series is clearly preparing for the next season. The story in the last episode provides three clear tracks that can continue next season. But this will probably be a completely different story. The question is whether the fans of the drama side can go along with this and whether the fans of the SF side have even lasted until the last episode. In the end, I am glad that I persevered and, despite the above, I am curious to see what direction the makers want to take in any subsequent season(s).

Wonderful analysis that I fully agree with. Too much long-winded family drama and far too little discussion of the mystery of the mysterious gate room. But it is precisely because of that mystery that you keep watching. I had a one-month Premium trial via Amazon and ended up with this series. I watched it one after the other (in just a few days) and after seeing the eighth episode I was already looking forward to the sequel because of the gigantic cliffhanger.. It's strange that this series was already available in 2022 and I wasn't even aware of it yet. Usually new series can also be found via alternative channels (usenet), but this one was unknown to me until recently. But as a SF and mystery lover, finally a series to watch again. And exactly as you write, the story is not actually about the mystery and certainly not about that distant planet, but mainly about the older couple, who are excellently played by Sissy Spacek and JS Simmons, the latter also performing excellently in the series Counterpart, which is also highly recommended in this specific genre! Only in the last episode do you see more of that distant planet and that is in fact a complete cliffhanger. That makes it all the more sad that the series appears to have been cancelled. It is really a trend to produce good series with potential and then cancel them and keep renewing crap series such as The Orville (I am a SF lover but extremely allergic to comedies). It's a shame that we no longer get a denouement as to why the gate rooms are there, who built them and which organization currently uses them and why. These are all questions that we will never get an answer to.

Unfortunately, this series is canceled after 1 season, I read on Variety.com (and a lot of other sites). It turns out to be difficult to find an audience for this kind of genre-mixing series. Too bad, because no fewer than three possible storylines were set up for subsequent seasons. And I was quite curious about that.

I don't have a final opinion yet. Only seen episode 1. Only drama, the lives of two older people who still live independently. This series talks about SF. I hope that more will happen, otherwise I will really give up. No tension, triggers anywhere. Well acted. I'm curious to see if it will continue to hold my attention and if it will get better with each episode.
