Patria is a Spanish mini-series which aired on HBO. The series premiered on 27 September 2020.
Set in Spanish Basque Country and taking place over thirty years during the separatist terrorism of ETA, Patria tells a story through the eyes of two families divided by the violent conflict. It follows Bittori and her family, whose lives implode the day ETA kills her husband, Txato, on his doorstep. The relationship with her intimate friend Miren, whose son belongs to an ETA command, also comes to an end. Both families must deal with grief and moral contradictions while life goes on.
The power of Patria lies in how real and human the story is told. You see not only the political side, but especially what violence does to ordinary people and families. The actresses who play Bittori and Miren are very convincing. You feel their pain, sadness and anger.
The series jumps back and forth in time at times, which makes you understand how events slowly change their lives. The atmosphere is often somber, which fits well with the heavy subject matter.
Patria is a moving and well-made series about friendship, loss and the difficulty of forgiveness.
