Sex Education - Season 2

I think that the title of the series says pretty much everything it has to. The theme 'sex' is clearly the focus of the series. The series revolves around Otis (Asa Butterfield, Merlin) and a classmate who team up to give advice about sex to his other classmates. Giving advice resulted in plenty of awkward situations, but it also resulted in fresh and exciting comedy.

How Otis ended up providing sex advice is something that was explained in the first season of Sex Education. In the first season, it is revealed that Otis's mother is a professional sex advisor. Otis acquired a lot of knowledge about the topic because of his mother. Those in his inner circle see a lot of possibilities. One of his classmates, Meave (Emma Mackey), manages to convince him to provide advice to students in exchange for money. The second season carries on with this storyline.

At the beginning of the second season, all appears well. Otis has a girlfriend, his mom is in a new relationship, and his best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa, Stonemouth) has no complaints either. It appears, however, that not everything is going that well. It becomes clear pretty quickly that both Otis and his mom experience some problems in their relationships.

Furthermore, other characters find themselves dealing with new problems. Adam (Connor Swindells, Jamestown), who had gotten very close with Eric, finds himself at military school. Eric falls in love with someone else, but he can't seem to get Adam out of his head. Maeve's mother comes back into her life, and she doesn't want that all. That makes perfect sense considering what happened between Maeve and her mom. Furthermore, Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling, Will) is given a lot of screentime as he has to cope with an incredible amount of performance pressure from his mothers.

Sex Education is a series that manages to grasp your attention in various ways. The series contains a lot of humour, but there is certainly also a large amount of drama. Generally, everything feels quite realistic, and viewers should be able to identify themselves with the characters. A lot of issues that some teens will probably have to deal with are dealt with adequately in Sex Education. Not everything has to do with sex. For example, one of the storylines of the second season involves dealing with a terrible marriage.

Next to an enticing story that viewers could watch in one sitting, the series also has an excellent soundtrack. A lot of familiar songs can be heard, and most of these are covered well. The cast is excellent, and all the actors manage to portray their characters convincingly. As a viewer, it'll be easy to sympathize with the experiences of the characters. The foundation that was created in the first season should be enough to result in more seasons. I do hope that certain storylines will be rounded off quickly in the next season, as some may last a bit too long, which can be quite frustrating.

Everything taken into account, the second season is a worthy sequel to the first. It continues to build on the strong foundation of the previous season. The series is put together well and doesn't shy away from more mature topics. Some of the storylines should be rounded off a bit faster, but this isn't bothersome, yet. I think that Sex Education is suitable for both young and old. Hopefully, there will be more seasons.

Based on everything, I will give the second season of Sex Education a solid 8!
