The series, which premieres Wednesday, January 8, centers on Allen’s Matt and his estranged adult daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), who moves back home with her two kids (Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis)—and the classic Pontiac GTO she stole from her father—when her life hits a rough patch.

Shifting Gears marks a return to ABC for Allen, who led one of the biggest sitcoms of the '90s with Home Improvement and starred in six seasons of Last Man Standing for the network (the latter series then moved to Fox for three more seasons). ABC placed a series order for Shifting Gears in July.
The series also features Daryl "Chill" Mitchell and Seann William Scott as employees of the vintage car restoration business that Matt owns.
Shifting Gears hails from 20th Television. Michelle Nader serves as showrunner and executive produces with Allen, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, Rick Messina, John Pasquin, Jim Patterson, Bob Daily and John Amodeo. Dennings serves as executive producer. Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, who developed the series but left after it went to series, are executive producers on the pilot.
