In the story, Jones played the role of Suzie Sakamoto, an American woman living in futuristic Kyoto, Japan. Her life is turned upside down when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As a "solace," she is given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots created by her husband's electronics company. They develop an unlikely friendship and begin to uncover the dark truth about what really happened to her family.
The series was created by The Affair and The Last Tycoon's Katie Robbins, who also served as showrunner, and executive producer Lucy Tcherniak. Jones also served as executive producer on the series, leading a cast that included Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura and Judy Ongg.
Robbins also served as writer and executive producer through her Babka Pictures. The story is based on the novel The Dark Manual by Japan-based Irish writer Colin O'Sullivan.
The American series had the distinction of being filmed entirely in Japan. Production began in the summer of 2022, before Japan had fully reopened its borders to tourists, and ran through the rest of the year.
It’s the second major American series filmed in Japan to be canceled in recent months. Max announced in June that crime series Tokyo Vice would not return for a third season, though showrunners are keen for the series to continue with international partners who have picked up the drama for broadcast.
