New spin-off series of The Boys in development at Prime Video

The Boys universe expands once again with The Boys: Mexico, a new series from Blue Beetle writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
Diego Luna (pictured below, right) and Gael García Bernal (pictured below, left) will helm production of The Boys: Mexico and are considering taking on acting roles, although neither will have a major role, sources have said shared.

Details about the premise are still being kept under wraps.

A co-showrunner search is underway for creator, writer and executive producer Dunnet-Alcocer, who is now working on the script. The team behind The Boys: Mexico, which will be shot in the Latin American country, is working on budgets for the new series and they have yet to start casting, sources said.

The Mexico offshoot comes from the key creative organizations behind the other series in The Boys franchise, mothership developer Eric Kripke and his Kripke Enterprises, Point Gray Pictures from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, Original Film from Neil H. Moritz, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Loreli Alba is expected to oversee for Point Grey.

Based on the New York Times bestselling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys is a fun and irreverent look at what happens when superheroes - who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as gods - misuse superpowers instead of using them for good.

The Boys, a group of vigilantes intent on stopping the corrupt superheroes, continue their heroic quest to uncover the truth about The Seven and Vought - the multi-billion dollar conglomerate that controls the superheroes and hides their dirty secrets. They are seemingly powerless against the superpowers.

Following the runaway success of The Boys, which is now in its fourth season, two spinoff series were released in 2023: the animated The Boys Presents: Diabolical, which premiered in March, and the college spinoff Gen V, which recently concluded its first season and has been renewed for season two.

The Boys: Mexico is the latest project from rising star Dunnet-Alcocer, who wrote the screenplay for Warner Bros. superhero film Blue Beetle. Pictures/DC Studios. He recently wrote the screenplay for Sony's El Muerto from director Jonás Cuarón. The native of Queretaro, Mexico also wrote and produced Miss Bala in 2019. Dunnet-Alcocer is also attached as a screenwriter on the new version of Universal Pictures' Scarface.

Luna and García Bernal are veteran actors whose careers exploded after they collaborated in the hit 2001 Spanish-language film Y Tu Mamá También, directed by Alfonso Cuarón. Since then they have reunited several times, including in Rudo y Cursi (2008) and Casa de Mi Padre (2012).

Most recently, Luna joined the Star Wars universe in the Disney+ TV series Andor, a prequel to Star Wars: Rogue One. García Bernal recently starred in the Amazon bio-drama Cassandro, playing gay wrestler Saúl Armendáriz.

The longtime friends and collaborators became producing partners in 2018 under their La Corriente del Golfo (The Gulf Stream) banner. Recent projects they produced include the aforementioned Cassandro and the talk show Pan y Circo, presented by Luna, both for Amazon.

I didn't like Blue Beetle much, so I fear the worst.
