The Boys has wrapped filming with its fifth and final season

Eric Kripke, the creator and showrunner of The Boys, has announced that filming for the fifth and final season has officially wrapped.
Eric Kripke shared a photo on Instagram of himself looking out over the iconic conference room of The Seven, where the seven supes (superheroes) come together. In his post, Kripke revealed that it was the last time he would ever be on that set, as it is soon to be demolished. He called it a bittersweet moment, but mostly emphasized his deep sense of gratitude. According to Kripke, the series was fortunate to not only have the best cast and crew, but also a great story and the right moment in time — something he says is exceptionally rare.

In his post, Kripke thanked both the team behind the scenes and the fans extensively, concluding by saying, "That's it. To the #TheBoys family, thank you, I love you all. To the fans, thank you for watching, I can't wait to see you all in the grand finale." Several cast members responded emotionally to his post. Jack Quaid, who plays Hughie Campbell, wrote, "Love you dude. Thank you for literally everything." Laz Alonso, who has been with the cast since the beginning as Mother's Milk, also thanked Kripke, describing it as "lightning in a bottle," while Erin Moriarty (Starlight) expressed her gratitude with, "Love you. Thank you. x 1000."

In an interview recorded on June 22, Jack Quaid told The Hollywood Reporter that he only had about six days of shooting left and that it felt “emotional” and “bittersweet” to say goodbye to his character Hughie Campbell. He spoke about the surreal experience of slowly realizing that he would be closing this chapter. At the same time, he emphasized how proud he is of what the team has accomplished this season and that he’s glad Kripke got the chance to wrap up the story exactly as he originally envisioned it. Quaid added that it’s difficult to end a series on a high note, but that he’s confident that the final season will be a strong one that fans will enjoy.

Although the fourth season wrapped up in July of last year, it was announced before that season that the series would end with season five. Kripke previously said that he always planned to end around season five. He indicated that he thinks the number five is a nice, rounded number: it gives him enough time to get to know the characters well, create space for a ‘calm before the storm’ moment (which he saw as the role of season four), and ultimately reach a big and satisfying climax.

Although the main series is almost over, The Boys universe is far from over. In 2023, the spin-off Gen V was released, which focuses on young supes who go to a superhero university. In addition, Prime Video announced a new prequel series, Vought Rising, in July, which will revolve around the supes Soldier Boy and Stormfront, played by Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash, respectively. The exact date for season five on Amazon Prime Video has not yet been announced, but fans can at least prepare for an emotional and grand finale.

The Boys has pushed so many boundaries in four seasons that I can hardly imagine what they have in store for the grand finale. Bizarre, brutal and brilliant, I am so curious to see how they are going to end this. Bring on that final season!
