Unlike last year's Prehistoric Planet, this series didn't dedicate time to scientific substantiation. And given what I consider the enormous amount of speculation, that could have really improved the series. Here too, I saw hints of anthropomorphism, but thankfully less so than in PP.

The series looks fantastic, but I seriously doubt the science behind the content. For example, in the first two episodes they keep talking about reptiles and how they're being supplanted by dinosaurs. But dinosaurs are reptiles too! That's how I've always learned it, at least. If there are different insights now, fine, but explain them. And that doesn't happen.

They sometimes refer to these reptiles as Ancient Reptiles. This is to distinguish between "true" dinosaurs (which are part of the clade Dinosauria or its direct predecessors) and other reptiles and reptile-like animals. These "ancient reptiles" are sister groups of ancestors of, for example, crocodiles and lizards, or reptile groups that have completely disappeared.

The main difference between these groups is the shape of the hips and the positioning of the legs relative to the hips. Dinosaurs' legs are directly under their bodies. In other reptiles, the legs extend outward (think lizard or turtle).

They could have explained this difference more clearly, but I also understand that a term needs to be found to indicate this group of animals (which are in very different branches of the tree of life).

I had hoped that our house biologist could say a bit more about this :-)
Thank you for your clear explanation. It's still a shame they didn't do that in the series itself, but it's clear to me now.

It's a visually beautiful series, and Morgan Freeman can tell it beautifully, but it doesn't give me a good idea of which dinosaurs lived where and when, which dinosaurs are related to each other, and how that evolved.
I would therefore have liked to see them stay in one era a bit longer and tell more about the different dinosaurs, rather than just one or two and then quickly move on.

The series would definitely have benefited from more episodes.
