Luciane Buchanan will not return for the third season of The Night Agent.

In 2023, the then relatively unknown New Zealand actress Luciane Buchanan was discovered worldwide by Netflix viewers thanks to her role as Rose Larkin in the spy series The Night Agent.
As a brilliant cybersecurity expert who got caught up in a dangerous conspiracy alongside FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan) quickly won the hearts of fans. Although the first season ended with a farewell between Peter and Rose, she was the only one besides Basso to return in the second season.

For season three, however, that changes. The breakup between Peter and Rose in the season two finale turns out to be final — at least for now. “I will not be returning in season three of The Night Agent,” Buchanan said in an interview around the launch of her new series Chief of War (Apple TV+).

She emphasized how grateful she is for the impact the Netflix hit had on her career but also noted that the creators deliberately chose to focus the story around Peter. “The writers wanted to do justice to my character and not reduce her to a supporting role. I fully respect that.”

Showrunner Shawn Ryan confirmed in a statement that Buchanan was a beloved member of the Night Agent family and that Rose's relationship with Peter greatly contributed to the success of the first two seasons. However, her character did not fit into the storyline mapped out for season three. Ryan did not rule out the possibility of Rose reappearing in a later season, possibly in a reunion with Peter.

Meanwhile, Buchanan has found a new challenge in the historical epic Chief of War from Apple TV+. There, she plays the role of Ka‘ahumanu, the queen consort of King Kamehameha I and a key figure in the unification of Hawaii.

She landed the role while still filming the first season of The Night Agent. For Buchanan, who is of Tongan descent, it was a special opportunity to bring an important piece of Polynesian history to life alongside co-creator and lead actor Jason Momoa.

Too bad, Luciane Buchanan is the better actor of the two.
Anyway, season 2 was already a lot worse than season 1. I really hope they can make season 3 better again.
