Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Symphatizer is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy's struggles during the closing days of the Vietnam War and his ensuing exile in the United States.
Co-showrunner, executive producer, writer Park Chan-wook (The Little Drummer Girl) also directed the first three episodes, co-showrunner and writer Don McKellar also produces alongside A24, Downey Jr., Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell for Team Downey, Kim Ly, Niv Fichman for Rhombus Media, Ron Schmidt, author of the book Viet Thanh Nguyen and Jisun Back for Moho Film. The Sympathizer is a co-production of HBO, A24 and Rhombus Media.
