Netflix renews fantasy series The Witcher with a fifth season

Netflix renews fantasy series The Witcher with a fifth season

Geralt of Rivia will return for even more adventures. A second season starring Liam Hemsworth is coming to Netflix.
The Netflix fantasy series The Witcher returns this summer for its third season. The upcoming season of the monster slayer's adventures will be divided into two parts and will also mark the last time we see Henry Cavill in the title role of the silver-haired monster slayer, Geralt of Rivia. Liam Hemsworth will take on the role for the fourth season and it has now been confirmed that the actor will continue to play the role for some time to come.

The Witcher

In an interview with Deadline, the series' casting director, Sophie Holland, confirmed that Hemsworth and the other residents of The Continent will return for a fifth season on Netflix. Holland, who has worked on other projects for the streamer including Wednesday and Shadow and Bone, also noted that The Witcher's fifth season will be filmed back-to-back with season four. "We're about to start filming season four with Liam Hemsworth and there will be a short hiatus, but then we'll go straight into season five," she said.

The confirmation of a fifth season for the fan-favorite fantasy series lines up with the vision of showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, who recently revealed she was looking forward to seeing Hemsworth step into the role of Geralt. Hissrich noted that while ending the series after Cavill's departure was a possibility, there are "just too many stories to tell". On the small matter of a new silver-haired mutant for season four and beyond, the showrunner commented, "We're all excited about Liam coming. He's got huge shoes to fill, but also has a lot of energy and a lot of enthusiasm for it."

The Witcher

When The Witcher returns for its third season, there are some looming threats on the horizon, as shown in the new season's trailer. In the third season, Time of Contempt, the fifth book in the series on which the series is based, is directly adapted and Geralt will try to protect his Child of Surprise, Ciri (Freya Allan), with the help of the powerful sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra). While the shocking revelation that the White Flame aka Emhyr Var Emreis, Emperor of Nilfgaard, Duny, is Ciri's father, will certainly present a challenge to Geralt, the bigger enemy is sure to be the rise of the Wild Hunt and their desire to kill Ciri. Thanks to the release of the prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin, set a thousand years earlier, we now have a much more balanced understanding of these wraiths terrorizing the world.

The first part of The Witcher season three arrives on Netflix on June 29. Watch the trailer below.

I am very curious how many viewers will drop out after this 3rd season when Henry Cavill leaves. Am I one of them? Probably.

Me too I think. Cavill is actually the only reason I still watch this, because I don't really think it's that special.

Then I think you should adjust your grade if you don't find it that special because at the moment you still give the series a 9. ;) But I agree with both of you because I think the series is great but I am indeed afraid that this third season may also be the last for me because of the departure of Henry Cavill.

Haha, you're right Futsudo. I gave that 9 after the first season. I may have to adjust that down a bit now...

I find it impressive that they dare to do this with all the negativity I read online, while at the same time they cancel so many other series after a single season where I read positivity. M curious. As a fantasy fan, I think I'll keep watching.
