Good news for Big Bang fans: another popular character from the hit CBS sitcom is returning for the upcoming spinoff on HBO Max.John Ross Bowie, who played plasma physicist Barry Kripke on The Big Bang Theory, joins his colleagues Kevin Sussman (Stuart Bloom), Brian Posehn (Bert Kibbler) and Lauren Lapkus (Denise) in the split from franchise boss Chuck Lorre and Warner Bros. Television.
Since the project is still in development and has not been officially greenlit, Bowie (pictured) - like Sussman, Posehn and Lapkus - has signed a WBTV talent contract with the aim of starring in the proposed spin-off.
As reported in December, Big Bang creator Lorre has tapped writer Zak Penn and fellow Big Bang creator Bill Prady for the spinoff. The trio will co-write the script and produce the series.
Bowie was a recurring character in the original series. His Barry Kripke quickly became a fan favorite when he was introduced in season two and continued to recur for the rest of the series' twelve seasons.
As a plasma physicist and string theorist from Caltech, Kripke was known for ruthlessly bullying his colleagues - with most of his statements directed at his string theorist rival Sheldon (Jim Parsons) - and for his distinctive speech pattern. He has rhotacism, where he pronounces "r" and "l" as "w", making him sound a bit like a cartoon character.
In addition to his recurring role on The Big Bang Theory, Bowie starred in the ABC comedy series Speechless. He also appeared in another CBS comedy series from Chuck Lorre, United States of Al. He also starred in the film Jumanji: The Next Level, among others.
