In season two, Trigger Point turns out to be an entertaining and fast-paced thriller that is fun to watch Last season I had my reservations about Trigger Point. The ITV series about explosive ordnance disposal agent Lana Washington (Vicky McClure, Line of Duty) had all the ingredients to be a strong series, but had difficulty getting off the ground. However, in the second season a switch seems to have been turned and the makers seem to have found the right tone with a faster pace and more action.
In this season, Lana is called into action again to stop a terrorist group with a penchant for explosives. Where it was previously an extreme right-wing organization, it is now a group of radical anti-capitalists. A perpetrator is found quite quickly, but it turns out that he cannot work alone. Lana and her colleagues are in a race against time to prevent even more deaths.
Bombs and explosions provide enough tension
If you want to see how Vicky McClure defuses all kinds of bombs under time pressure throughout six episodes, then Trigger Point is the place for you. This season offers exactly what you can expect: lots of fiddling with wires and timers with exciting music in the background, lots of explosions and many unexpected twists. It is enjoyable to watch and is exciting and entertaining enough to remain interesting for six episodes.
Just like last season, the villain is interesting and responds well to current events. But despite this and all the exciting moments, the series lacks a certain credibility and urgency that similar series in this genre have. Trigger Point focuses mainly on dismantling explosives and that is an angle that you don't often see. Despite this, Trigger Point offers too little innovation in the genre.
Trigger Point is not very original, but it is entertaining
Is that bad? No. The creators of this series know that providing exciting entertainment is the main goal, and they certainly succeeded. As always, it's a pleasure to see Vicky McClure in action with her wonderful no-nonsense attitude. Other actors such as Tomiwa Edun (Merlin), Mark Stanley (Game of Thrones) and Natalie Simpson (North Sea Connection) all play interesting characters who certainly add something to the series.
In the second season, Trigger Point has made significant leaps in quality. The pace is high, exciting and enjoyable. The main actors also do well. Yet unfortunately the series does not do enough to really distinguish itself from similar series and that is a shame. But despite this, I sincerely hope that there will be a third season.
