Trying surprised me. In a positive way. Now that the second season is available on Apple TV+, I started from scratch with season one. I don't often rewatch a series because there is so much new to see that it just seems stupid to watch the same thing twice. But time you spend on something beautiful is never wasted time, so I enjoy it again. Nikki and Jason steal your heart. You sit and watch it and before you know it you are completely sucked into the story. For both Ester Smith and Rafe Spall, it's their first major starring role in a series and they're doing a fantastic job. Both actors take you into their cozy life in Camden Town, London, where she works in a call center and he teaches English to immigrants. When it turns out that they can't have children, they start thinking about other options. Like adoption. But because they are ordinary people, like all of us, they don't think of themselves as good enough and only see their flaws. They therefore think they have little chance of an adopted child. So they decide to become a better version of themselves. Hilarity guaranteed. This is real feel good. From the top shelf. And the latter is a Flemish expression for 'of absolute top quality' (grin). Trying is British but feels universal. Because the truth is, of course, Nikki and Jason would make great parents, because they're great people, even if they don't always see it that way. I'm really looking forward to season two. But first, take a look again!
