Wednesday - Season 1

The fact that the second season of Wednesday has already been announced (2024) is a pretty decent indicator.
With director Tim Burton on the bill, expectations are of course high. His look at fairy tales and fantasy with a dark edge always looks slick, without compromising on quality. The television series Wednesday confirms this. Playing with bright colors against the black of Wednesday and her family creates beautiful contrasts. The quality is in everything, be it the visuals, the sound, or the cast. No wonder this series is such a success.

With Jenna Ortega in the role of Wednesday, the first success has already been achieved.

With Jenna Ortega (You) in the role of Wednesday, the first success has already been achieved. She plays her part with verve. The witty remarks, her dance steps, her look, and her appearance provide recognition that you expect from someone from the illustrious Addams Family. Some new elements are added to give the story a modern twist. For example, Wednesday has visions and she turns out to be a detective in the making.

What makes Wednesday so good is that this time the story didn't focus on the entire Addams family. It has been decided to focus on a family member. Fanatically aided by Thing (the living hand). In addition, Wednesday is placed in an unusual setting. After the umpteenth incident at school, she ends up at the Nevermore Academy. A place for werewolves, vampires, (a kind of) sirens, and a very dangerous monster. The latter turns out to be responsible for gruesome murders that put every outcast in a bad light.

Quirky, stubborn, stoic, and with dark witty humor.

Wednesday investigates the murders in her own unique way. Quirky, stubborn, stoic, and with dark witty humor. Filled with unexpected powers. Those powers are also provided by her fellow students. Like through her colorful, bright, and ever-cheerful roommate Enid (Emma Myers, Dead of Night), the mysteriously attractive Xavier (Percy Hynes White, The Gifted), and the understanding handsome Tyler (Hunter Doohan, Truth Be Told). During that investigation, Wednesday not only manages to get herself in trouble but also several other people. Including her parents, because they also have a past at Nevermore Academy.

Despite all the darkness that the Addams Family, werewolves, and various monsters bring, the television series remains very light-hearted overall. Don't expect a super exciting story. It is clearly a series for entertainment. This is in the excellent hands of Tim Burton. It is wonderful escapism to another world.

By choosing Wednesday as a focus point, the series also has something youthful. This can be seen, among other things, in the plot of this season. Although it remains unclear for a long time who is behind the evil, the search for the perpetrator is not actually the most important part of the series. That is the form, the acting of actors like Jenna, and the fact that, as a viewer, you don't have to think about anything else for a while. Delicious right?
