Breakout Kings

When I had watched all episodes of the series Prison Break, I started to search for another one that would be a bit like Prison Break. I came across this series called Breakout Kings. The name says it all: it's about inmates who escape from prison. They're going to be traced down by a team of inmates under the supervision of two U.S. Marshals.

U.S. Marshal Ray Zancanelli (Domenick Lombardozzi, Oz) stole money. This is the reason why he doesn't have a badge anymore. He puts a team together with another U.S. Marshal, Charlie Duchamp (Laz Alonso, The Mysteries of Laura). Eventually, the team includes Sean ''Shea'' Daniels (Malcolm Goodwin, The Son), Erica Reed (Serinda Swan, Hawaii Five-0) and Dr. Lloyd Lowery (Jimmi Simpson, How I Met Your Mother). The team is completed with technician Julianne ''Jules'' Simms (Brooke Nevin, CSI).

Every episode, an inmate escapes from prison. The team, which is called Breakout Kings by Dr. Lloyd Lowery, is informed of an escape and tries to track down the inmate to put him back in prison. The inmates who make up the team get a one-month sentence reduction for each fugitive they catch. At first sight, it looks like there's nothing that connects the episodes together, but after a few episodes you'll learn more about the history of each person. For example, for Ray Zancanelli it's a great opportunity to get his badge back and be a U.S. Marshal again. So, each member of the team has his own history and reasons for wanting to be free again.

When I started watching the series, I found it a bit superficial. Later, when the characters' backgrounds were told, the series got more depth. The different personalities of the characters create more tension in the series: for example, Dr. Lloyd Lowery is really intelligent and often uses metaphors to clarify things. He reminds me a lot of Michael Scofield from Prison Break (my favourite character). There’s an episode where T-Bag, also from Prison Break, appears in Breakout Kings and in this way, a reference was made to my ‘old’ series. This made the series even better!

This series is, according to me, the perfect series to watch when you're in between series. You don’t have to think that much, nothing’s really complicated, but also not too superficial. The only downside: the cliffhanger at the end of season 2. And the fact there won't be a new season. Maybe there’s hope if we all start watching?
