Colony - First Episode

After series like Suits and Mr. Robot, USA Network comes with a new show: Colony. Can this first episode hold my attention?

Colony takes place in the near future. An alien race has taken over and rules the earth. What strikes me immediately is that throughout the first episode there is not a single alien in sight. The fact is, earth is tyrannically ruled by the Proxies who are ordinary people who have decided to collaborate with the aliens. So they are disparagingly called 'Collaborators'.

In this first episode we meet Will Bowman (Josh Holloway, Lost), a lorry driver and former soldier, who was separated from one of his sons during the invasion. He and his wife Katie (Sarah Wayne Callies, The Walking Dead) are still trying to decide whose fault it really was. Will decides, without his wife's knowledge, to rescue his son from another area which is off-limits. From that moment on, everything changes when his plans go wrong.

Remarkably, this show immediately grabbed my attention. The story line is not particularly original, but the execution certainly is. The world which is depicted in this show is incredibly realistic. The sets and special effects form a great unity and they both look fantastic. The show is very well shot and gives a complete picture of a post-invasion world.

The ending of the first episode contains a plot twist I had somewhat been expecting, but it could also be due to the fact I watch so many series that it's hard to take me by surprise any more. Still, I was not disappointed by this twist; it should make the rest of the series all the more interesting!

Remarkably, this show immediately grabbed my attention.

Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies are both great actors, which they display here as well. Unfortunately, their chemistry is not so great, but there is still a chance this will develop in the course of the series.

All in all, this show has struck the right chord with me which not many shows can accomplish during a first episode. If the rest of the story continues to be well written, the acting remains at the same level and the shots keep looking great, this show could become of the same calibre as Suits or Mr. Robot.

An 8.5!
