Elementary - Complete series

I must admit that I was a bit disappointed when I heard that Elementary was shutting down. I've always found it one of CBS's stronger crime series. Wherever I like to watch the CSIs and NCISes of the world, the level of Elementary is a lot higher than that of those other series. In this review I look back at the seven seasons of Elementary.

Elementary is a crime series. It is based on the Sherlock Holmes books by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but with a twist. Sherlock Holmes, played by Jonny Lee Miller (Eli Stone), lives in New York instead of London and gets a sober companion to keep him away from drugs. Joan Watson (Lucy Liu), a former surgeon turned professional drug buddy, moves in with him. In the end, they solve a crime together every week. In the background, there are a number of common threads running through the seasons. Consider, for example, Sherlock's drug use or Sherlock's classic enemy, Moriarty.

Inspired by Sir Conan Doyle's Sherlock, but with a twist.

I think the strong thing about Elementary is that the makers were inspired by Sir Conan Doyle's Sherlock, but not guided. Often they have chosen their own path, which you could already see when choosing a female Watson. It means that something new has been made from something that has already been told hundreds of times. Sometimes the differences are very clear, but sometimes more subtle. I find nice details when they suddenly show the title of one of the books (Hounds of Baskersville) in an episode (season four); but completely different from the original.

All good things come to an end and so does Elementary.

This makes the series different from the other Sherlock remake of the same time: Sherlock (2010). Where the British BBC series has remained much closer to the original, this series deviates a bit further, and they also dare to make exciting choices. For example, I am referring to the storylines of Moriarty or Irene, for those who have already seen some. Elementary has stayed closer to the original in one area: it mainly revolves around crime cases. Everything around it is secondary, where that came out much more in the BBC series. But let's be honest; this series does not have the production quality of the BBC series. And some episodes are also a bit repetitive, although I think the quality is good overall.

Another thing I've always loved about Elementary is that it never tried to make Sherlock and Watson a romantic couple. They were partners, not a couple, or potential couple, or whatever. It kind of feels like there's a need to have this hit-or-miss thing in every series, but I think Elementary has shown really well that there's no need for that.

The series has provided good and consistent acting throughout the seasons. They are also not the least names that have played in the series. In addition, the camera work, the images and the layout were also nicely done. The special thing is that these things were also held through the seasons. Of course, some episodes were a bit less, but the overall quality was good.

But all good things come to an end and so does Elementary. Partly I am happy again. You could say they stopped at the peak, or at least didn't let it slide to a trough. After all, we know CBS as that channel that milks every penny from a series, only to unceremoniously throw the cadaver in the trash. Elementary has been given a final season to wrap it all up, for a nice total of seven seasons.

Well, and then the last episode. I think the end of the series is good. It's not a spectacular ending with a lot of noise. But I don't think that would have fit in the series either. A solid number of plot twists; we are used to that. All in all, I think it's just right and the fans can be happy with the completed whole. That is already more than many other series have received.

So if you like a crime series with a weekly case, then I think this is a good series for you. In terms of content, it is a lot better than the CSIs and NCISes of the world, if a bit repetitive at times. But yes, with 154 episodes, I think that will happen.

It's elementary, that I'm going to miss this series a bit.
