Surprisingly nice series that only came to my attention after I, more or less accidentally, read a review by Dave from last year. That made me want to give this series a try. I haven't regretted that. It is a comedy without a laugh track or audience, but full of jokes that usually land well. Also with many jokes that are made so casually that you only realize them a little later. Brilliant. Hannah Einbinder does a great job as Ava, but the show is stolen by Jean Smart as Deborah Vance. I really laughed out loud at least once with every episode of season 1 (I'm going to start 2 now). And that doesn't happen to me that much. Highly recommended for people who like humor with an "edge" here and there.
Unfortunately, the fourth season is a disappointment for me. It has become more drama than comedy and the storylines are just not fun anymore. The freshness of the first few seasons is gone. And the character Kayla has unfortunately gotten more screen time. And she is especially very unpleasant. It's still unclear whether there will be a fifth season, but to be honest, I don't think there's a need for that anymore.
The first two seasons of Hacks are a feast for the eyes and senses! Vegas baby, haha! Oh, and Jean Smart plays the role of a lifetime, there's no doubt about it. The clash between the two main characters, both egocentric overachievers—one a boomer, the other a Gen Zer—is nothing short of fireworks. The jokes are sometimes a bit lame, but more often than not, they're top-notch. This comedy is truly top-notch.
