Legacies - First episode

Last Thursday the time had come: the premiere of Legacies. Legacies is a spin-off of The Originals, a supernatural drama which, in its turn, was a spin-off of the very popular The Vampire Diaries. As a loyal fan of both series, I can admit they were better in the first few seasons than the last ones. Did I really need another spin-off? Not really, to be honest. But I have to admit that the universe in which these shows take place is a great place to dwell in, so I couldn't resist watching the pilot of Legacies.

Legacies takes place two years after the events in The Originals. Hope, again portrayed by Danielle Rose Russell, has returned to the Salvatore school which was established in season eight of The Vampire Diaries. After everything that has happened, Hope has decided to close herself off of all emotions except anger, and perhaps pain. The story immediately starts with a good pace and in the first few minutes we see Vampire veteran Matthew Davis as Alaric Saltzman.

A new werewolf called Rafael (Peyton Smith) is helped by Hope and Alaric during his first transformation and subsequently taken to the school, together with his foster brother, Landon (Aria Shahghasemi) who was introduced in The Originals. The pilot mainly focuses on introducing the new characters and the school itself. The school actually resembles Hogwarts and to show that the writers are aware of this fact, they put in as much as three Harry Potter references. New characters like M.G. (Quincy Fouse), Penelope (Lulu Antariksa) and the familiar, but older Saltzman twins Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) and Josie (Kaylee Bryant) emphasize the fact that Legacies is actually very different from its predecessors.

The Originals was a bit more mature than The Vampire Diaries, but was still mainly a supernatural young adult drama. Legacies is also a supernatural drama, but has a completely different atmosphere. The focus seems to be on a younger audience, like a boarding school filled with hormonal teenagers mixed with the supernatural beings theme. Julie Plec, producer of the show, previously announced that Legacies could be watched as a stand-alone series. So trying to attract a younger audience is not surprising.

But is Legacies meant to be a stand-alone series? The pilot contains a number of fun references to the other shows, including a cameo of a familiar face, but generally speaking the episode can be watched without any prior knowledge. Of course, you will know more about certain characters if you have seen the other series, in addition, some basic information is not provided again, for example, what kind of powers a vampire has, but that's easily inferred by just watching.

The acting, cinematography, dialogues, these are not the strong points of this series, but are typical of a teenage drama. Russell's acting is still not great, but it's okay, but in my opinion, she is not good enough to carry the whole show. Davis is consistent as always and the new characters are of a level you can expect of a teenage drama. But from a show like Legacies you can't expect the highest level in these areas.

this pilot showed that it is very different from its predecessors.

It's difficult to predict if Legacies will continue after this season. The pilot was good enough to arouse the curiosity of the loyal viewer, but in my opinion not good enough to attract new viewers. But I'm a loyal viewer and thought it was well worth my time. Was it really necessary to make Legacies? No, but that doesn't mean, now it's here, that it won't be popular. It was just the first episode and I can't wait what the rest of the season will bring. I, for one, will continue watching

I will give this pilot eight points. Legacies is, as a classic teenage drama, of such quality, it can easily compete with other teenage dramas. The Vampire universe has a large fanbase and I suspect that many are willing to give Legacies a chance and will continue watching, just out of curiosity. It was a good pilot that set the right tone for the rest of the season. Besides, this pilot showed that it is very different from its predecessors. I can't wait to see what will happen. So I'm ready for next week's episode!
