Lost in Space (2018) - season 1

The first 10 episodes of the science-fiction show Lost in Space were all made available on Netflix in the middle of April. The show revolves around the Robinson family, who have travelled alongside a large group of humans in search of a new home. The destination is the habitable planet known as Alpha Centauri. Their mother ship is attacked however, and several members of the crew have to evacuate by using smaller ships. This includes the Robinson family, who are using the Jupiter 2 vessel and end up crash landing on a different, but also habitable planet.

The Robinson family has its own dynamics. Father and ex-marine John Robinson (Toby Stephens, Black Sails) and mother Maureen Robinson (Molly Parker, House of Cards) have been living separately from each other for quite some time. Their eldest daughter, 18-year- old Judy, serves as the doctor and her younger sister Penny often feels overshadowed by her intelligent sister. Then we also have the youngest member of the family, 11-year-old Will, who is a bit of an outsider in more than one respect. He also manages to find a robot, which he encounters while alone on the planet. He saved it and since then the robot protects him by stating: "Danger, Will Robinson!". On the planet where they are stranded, they meet several other survivors, including those of Jupiter 4 and 18. Amongst them is Dr. Smith (Parker Posey, Louie), a dangerous manipulator, who is able to set people against each other.

Lost in Space is a well-made show.

Lost in Space is a well-made show. The special effects and sets are convincing during the entire series.

The special effects and sets are convincing during the entire series. The planet where the Robinsons had to land has several climates: a colder one and a more temperate one. The various landscapes are shown beautifully. The various characters are interesting and by means of flashbacks we get to know more about them. The acting was quite good, especially Parker Posey, who portrayed the sociopath Dr. Smith. Her dialogue is incredibly strong as she manages to talk herself out of difficult situations over and over again. I am, however, curious if the writers are capable of providing her character with a bit more backstory.

Lost in Space is not a deep show, with a message to humankind. The episodes are aimed towards the average viewer. At times it reminded me of Falling Skies, but with superior storyline and acting. The most interesting interaction in the series is that between Will and the robot. The robot has several secrets and even though it appears as if Will is capable of controlling the robot, at times the question arises whether or not that is truly the case.

The show is a remake of the similarly named show made by Irwin Allen in the sixties. All the main characters have the same names as in the original show. The main story is pretty much the same: Dr. Smith is still a trouble maker and the robot still has an important role in the story. The original series, however, was more humorous and sometimes more or less a parody on science fiction. This new show is a bit more serious and has provided us with a lot more backstory regarding the Robinsons. I did like that the intro tune is once again made by John Williams. He is also known for being the composer of the Star Wars theme. In May 2018 it was made known that there will be a second season, which I will definitely watch.
