Series of the year 2018 - Best non-English language series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2018 and discusses the category Best non-English language series. Between Monday January 7th and Monday February 4th you can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others.
Originally, non-English language series were not my cup of tea. But after watching several very good Scandinavian series and even a Spanish one, yes, indeed La Casa de Papel, I was convinced. In the meantime I saw a lot of non-English language series and I have to admit that some of them are rubbish. But that's the same with English-language series. But a lot are definitely worth watching.

Especially the Scandinavian series are way above average. Again the writers and members of MySeries provided a nice list of nominees. To be honest, some of the series I have not seen yet, but they are on my to-watch list. Before you say, why is La Casa de Papel not on this list? Because it didn't have episodes broadcast in 2018. But I'm positive it will be on the list next year. Not happy with the ten nominees? You can always make use of your wild card. Which series wins will be up to you!

1983

The series 1983 is the very first Netflix Original from Poland. The story takes place in a dystopian world: the Iron Curtain has never fallen, The Soviet Union is in full power and Poland is a police state. The cause of this alternative future is a terrorist attack that took place in 1983. In 2003, after twenty relatively peaceful years, a young law student and a disgraced police officer discover an old conspiracy that could change the fate of Poland, and the rest of the world, forever.

Bad Banks

Dutch actor Barry Atsma plays the banker Gabriel Fenger in this German series and opinions are hopelessly divided. In The Netherlands the series has been dubbed and the viewer wasn't happy about that. But for the viewer who wants to watch the original version, you can now see it on Netflix.

The Bridge (2011)

In my opinion, The Bridge is the first non-English language series you just can't ignore. The Swedish/Danish series revolves around Saga Noren who as a detective has to deal with crimes committed on the Swedish/Danish border. The crime series ended last year, but luckily we still have the DVDs.

Cable Girls

Cable Girls is the first Spanish series from Netflix and had three seasons by now and the fourth has been announced. It takes place in the 1920s and follows the lives of four women with different backgrounds who are hired as telephone operators at a phone company.

La Casa De Las Flores

Netflix appears to be the main supplier of non-English language series, like this Spanish series La Casa de Las Flores. In this show we follow the rich and almost perfect family de la Mora who owns a flower shop. Virginia (Veronica Castro) is the matriarch of the family and manager of the shop.

La Catedral del Mar

Antena 3 broadcasts the Spanish historical series La Catedral del Mar. It takes place in the 14th century and is based on the best seller by Ildefonso Falcones. The eight-part drama can be seen on Netflix.

Dogs of Berlin

The first episode of Dogs of Berlin was rated by Karin Witowski with a nine. Not a bad start then for the German Netflix series about two detectives investigating the murder of a Turkish-German football player. The first season premiered on 7 December and had ten episodes.

Elite

Elite is the Spanish crime series from Netflix. Here we get to look through the eyes of three working-class teenagers who attend the most exclusive school in Spain. This was not a voluntary choice because their school had been destroyed during an earthquake. So they had to go to school elsewhere. This leads to a clash between the poor and the rich pupils. The series has been renewed with a second and third season.

Greyzone

Greyzone is the second Swedish/Danish series on this list, but that is all that this thrilling series has in common with The Bridge. Greyzone revolves around a possible terrorist attack in Scandinavia, which the Swedish and Danish Security Services try to prevent. Emotions are running high when they are working against the clock and under constant threat. Furthermore, drone engineer Victoria Rahbek finds herself in a nightmare when she is taken hostage in her own home by terrorists who are in possession of nuclear weapons.

The Rain

The Rain is a Danish thriller series by Netflix. When rain becomes your worst enemy, what do you do? That is the main question in this series. But of course that is not all. It is also about survival, about good and evil and which character traits will surface in human beings when a catastrophe destroys your world. The Rain has been renewed with a second season.

These were all ten nominees chosen by you, the readers and writers of MySeries. In case you want to vote for a different series, you can use your wild card. Good luck voting!

Kind regards,

Mandy
