The Series of the Year Award: every year is full of surprises, and 2024 is no exception. Sometimes it feels more like a competition of "who has the most viewers?" than "which series is the best?" It almost seems like the streaming service with the largest marketing department is already halfway to the finish line.

And yes, the results? That raised questions. When I saw the number one for best series and number three for most disappointing series, I spontaneously raised an eyebrow. How?! But hey, tastes differ – and that's exactly what makes this election so entertaining.

And then the Wildcards... this year unfortunately none made it into the top 10. Apparently, they are as rare as a cliffhanger without plot holes.

Best actress of 2024
The British royal family not only caused quite a stir in real life, but it also caused a lot of commotion on screen. Was it real or not? Personally, I think a disclaimer is unnecessary because we will never know what Queen Elizabeth II actually said in the semi-private quarters of her palaces. In the final two seasons of The Crown, Imelda Staunton was given the honor of playing the iconic role of the British Queen. No wonder she reached the top of the pageant, far ahead of the numbers two and three who couldn't keep up with her from the start.

The Queen had little to fear from her competitors in the actress category, but The Penguin? That was a different story! Colin Farrell was so unrecognizable in the series of the same name that you almost wondered if it was really him. For more than 30% of voters he was the undisputed winner. Numbers two and three couldn't even keep up with him from the start - a real penguin race! Maybe it's time to put The Penguin on your watch list if you haven't seen it yet... I mean, I haven't seen it yet either, but hey, my watch list is now as long as a soap opera. Can I use that as an excuse?

Animation, anime, cartoon... call it what you want, but the fact is: none of those characters are a real person. They are all born from the mind of a draftsman, who once put his creations on paper – although nowadays it is usually the computer that has replaced paper. The final season of Marvel's What If...? apparently made a big impression, because the Disney+ animated series had hardly any competition. Numbers two and three had to do it from the start without a real view of the top!

For the first time, this category has been separated from the other new category, fantasy. In previous editions of the Series of the Year, these two genres were inextricably linked, but now they will stand on their own two feet for the first time in 2025. And what a battle it was in the science fiction category! Numbers one, two and three were close together, but in the last week of the election The Boys absolutely did not want to move from their place. Just like in 2022, the boys who fight against the evil of superheroes managed to take first place again!

In the split fantasy category, there was absolutely no real competition, while the competition really wasn't any worse – or in some cases even better. With fantasy and science fiction it seems to mainly revolve around who has the most money, the largest streaming service and the best marketing behind them. Because let's be honest, number three probably wouldn't have finished so high if it hadn't been shown on no fewer than three streaming services!

Number five in 2022, but now the sympathetic muscle man Jack Reacher can receive the first prize. It was exciting to see whether the number two could overtake him halfway, but with one firm right foot on the gas, Reacher was already out of sight. The battle for third place was a lot more exciting, but in the end the umpteenth Harlan Coben film adaptation managed to cling firmly to the bronze. Apparently we never get tired of it!

The miniseries, which was eventually renewed, managed to become the best wildcard with 22 votes. But yes, renewed means that you are officially no longer a miniseries... and so you are not allowed to compete for the win in this category. The real tension was in the tail, not only between numbers two, three, four and five, but also in the neck-and-neck race between numbers one and two in the final week. Ultimately, number four came out on top in crime. Well, crime apparently pays after all.

That's why it's all the better if you effortlessly leave two true comedians behind you, with no less than 6%, and enjoy your first prize on a terrace in Paris. Maybe have a croissant, a sip of wine, and laugh nonchalantly while thinking: "You did it, Emily. You made 'em laugh… without even trying that hard."

Number one in the drama category is, in my opinion, the biggest surprise of all. Until three days before the last voting day, the eventual number two was still firmly on the throne. And then – bam! – the Starz series pulled off a final sprint that was truly heartbreaking. No idea what they did in those last days, but it worked. After two bronze and one silver, the series can now finally climb the podium to receive the well-deserved gold. Third time's the charm? Nope. Fourth times is apparently the real magic number.

I have to be honest, I can't really say anything about these series. What I do know is that the La Casa de Papel spin-off had no intention of finishing anywhere other than first place. I can already see Berlin enthusiastically singing Bella Ciao as he steps to the MySeries stage with his head held high to receive the cup. Would he secretly still use the cup as a weapon? You never know with this charismatic thief!

Many protests preceded these elections: "Why was there no Belgian series among the ten nominations?" Well, this year the Dutch series were so strong that the person who selected the nominations decided to have the most votes count. We promise that we will try to distribute it better before the 2025 elections - fair is fair! I had hoped that this would give a wild card a little more chance, but unfortunately, a Belgian series did not get further than seven votes. A tough battle, but it remains an exciting race for next year. Who knows, the Belgian series might finally get the chance to say a little more "allez!" to say.

Would it be Max, or the Televizier Ring winner of 2024? In any case, the tension was much greater than in some Formula 1 races, where you actually know in advance who will walk away with the prize. But the real question was: could number three still throw a spanner in the works? Well, not really. Formula 1 racing cars are simply far too fast for a detour through the Low Countries. Even the best of the three would have difficulty overtaking that pit stop. So, although it was exciting, the winner was soon clear. But hey, a little drama is part of it, right?

Most Disappointing Series of 2024
Disappointments are part of life – and yes, also part of series. You are looking forward to a (new) series, you have high expectations for it, and then it turns out not to be quite what you had hoped for. Can happen, right? Fortunately, you can deal with your frustrations nicely by awarding a prize to the series that really disappointed you. This time, however, there is a strange touch to numbers one and three. The number three has actually achieved higher places in this election than ever, and the number one? He has previously won bronze, silver and gold. What went wrong? It seems like a plot twist that even the writers of the series wouldn't have dared to laugh at!

It's never fun when your favourite show announces its final season, especially when you're just getting into the stories and characters. And then you have to say goodbye to those characters that you start to understand just as well (or not at all - but maybe that's what makes it fun)! Fortunately, you can give them a nice farewell in the form of the MySeries Election. What immediately became clear is that MySeries voters are very fond of The Crown. It seems like they want the series to take the cake (pun intended)!

And there it is, the well-deserved gold for the remake that many believe is better than the original. Wow, dangerous statement, I know, but yes, I enjoyed James Clavell's Shōgun in the 80s, and yet now Shōgun completely blew me away – and many others along with me. It is not without reason that the series has defeated the stiff competition. Who knows, maybe the second season will win even more awards in 2026. In any case, we will follow it with lots of popcorn!

And then, drum roll... The winner of the Series of the Year Election 2024 in the Best Series category is... House of the Dragon! Wait, what?! Didn't he become number three among the disappointments? How?! But hey, the MySeries selector has spoken, and you can't change that. Until the last day, Shōgun seemed to get the second spot, but Reacher thought: “Time for a power-up!” and accelerated to achieve victory by one vote. More exciting than a cliffhanger!

Winners
The 2024 MySeries election was like opening a mega popcorn bag, with the winners jumping out of the bag like stars. And what do you think? Netflix proved again why they are the king of the streaming services. With four prizes to their name, it was clear: if you press the 'play' button, you can wait patiently for the prizes to come to you. However, Prime Video did not do anything less, because they pocketed quite a few prizes, with series that were the absolute top in their genres.
Losers
Disney+? They might have expected that they would make it all the way, but it was a quiet year for them. It looked like they were standing in the corner watching as the other streamers collected their prizes. In short, 2024 was a year in which the streaming services clearly showed who really stole the show. It was as if Netflix and Prime Video were saying "hold my drink" every time they received one prize after another.
