Origin - First episode

I had never heard of YouTube Premium or YouTube TV until I discovered this series: Origin. A science-fiction show about planets, astronauts and aliens. YouTube tries to compete with other streaming services, and being the number one video platform, that's not completely illogical. Even though I think there already are too many services, apparently there is still a need.

All in all Origin makes use of some familiar science-fiction tropes, which of course doesn't come across as new.

In the first episode a group of strangers wake up early on a ship that is supposed to take them to the planet Thea. No one knows how they have got there and who the others are. The trip is organized by an organisation called Siren Corporation. However, something went wrong en route. Some of the passengers have awakened from stasis to discover that the crew is missing, the ship is heavily damaged and an alien is roaming the empty corridors. The make matters worse, they can't trust each other because no one knows who they really are.

All passengers were told that their past would be erased if they chose to colonise a new world. Their own history automatically became a mystery. What was the reason behind this? What was Siren's goal? And who exactly are the passengers?

The abandoned passengers are being played by both well-known and relatively unknown actors. The characters are, among others, Yakuza member Shun (Sen Mitsuji), former bodyguard Lana (Natalia Tena, Game of Thrones), the whining Logan (Tom Felton, Harry Potter), hacker Lee (Adelayo Adedayo), the gentle giant Eric (Johannes Haukur Johannesson), the kind-hearted Venisha (Nina Wadia) and several other people. Every episode will focus mostly on one character and their individual backstory and in this way you as a viewer will learn what exactly has happened and who the passengers are.

All in all Origin makes use of some familiar science-fiction tropes, which of course doesn't come across as new. It even reminds me a bit of Lost, just now and then. But the first episode was entertaining, it had a good pace and you will be easily swept away into the story. But as the characters discover more about their situations and their former lives, the series loses some of its mystery. Of course this damages the rest of the series. But if you are a science-fiction fan and like a lot of action-filled scenes, Origin is the show for you.
