Switched at Birth - Season 1

On a dreary Sunday afternoon, I was watching TV and came accross the series 'Switched at Birth'. Instantly, my Sunday wasn't that boring anymore. What a lovely, recognisable series. Even though probably none of us is experiencing the same as Bay and Daphne, there are still many familiar and conceivable situations.

'Switched at Birth' is about the lives of Bay Kennish (Vanessa Marano, known for her roles in 'Without a Trace' and 'Gilmore Girls') and Daphne Vasquez (Katie Leclerc, known for her role in 'Fashion House'). Bay lives with her brother and her parents in a wealthy neighbourhood in Kansas, while Daphne lives with her mother and grandmother in a poor neighbourhood in Missouri.

It appears that Bay and Daphne were accidentally switched at birth in the hospital thus grew up with each other's parents. Even though this is a big shock for Bay and her parents, they decide to meet with Daphne's family. Both families experience recognition when they see their daughters, but at the same time they realise how strange the whole situation is. Then it appears that Daphne is deaf because of an illness that occurred at a young age. This doesn't make it easier for the Kennish family.

Daphne and her mother move in with the Kennish family due to unforeseen circumstances. This gives both families the chance to get to know each other better, but it also causes many uncomfortable situations.

The story is so relatable since the two teenagers struggle more than once with who they are and where they're from. Just as every 'normal' teenager they also struggle with love, jealousy and anger. Furthermore, the story is strongly written, which causes you to feel torn between Bay and Daphne, but you also catch yourself on prejudices of which you didn't even know you had them. It amazes me how great our adaptability is and it lets you 'grow' together with all the characters. In addition to all the 'juicy' series that primarily want to make you laugh, this is a lovely, fascinating story that doesn't let you go. 'Switched at Birth' is a must see for everybody who is willing to experience some depth.
