Tales of the Walking Dead - First episode

Tales of the Walking Dead doesn't seem to breathe new life into the zombie genre in its first episode. We do see interesting new characters and we get the promise of seeing old acquaintances.
The Walking Dead universe just keeps expanding and expanding. After Fear The Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond, the third spin-off is already seeing the first light of day: Tales of the Walking Dead. This series is cast in the form of anthology series. In each episode, we follow a different character, somewhere in the world of The Walking Dead. These can be completely new characters, but we also see old acquaintances.

In the first episode, we follow Joe (Terry Crews, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), a survivor of the zombie outbreak who lives in a fallout shelter with his dog and enjoys the little positive things this apocalyptic world has to offer. When his dog falls prey to the zombies, he decides to look for someone he had contact with before the zombie outbreak. Along the way, he meets Evie (Olivia Munn, The Newsroom) and together they search for their lost loved ones.

Does this really add anything new to what we already know? Not that. We have already seen almost every possible type of storyline, including the additional clichés from the zombie genre, in The Walking Dead and its spin-offs. The first episode of Tales of The Walking Dead is also guilty of this. Person decides to look for an old acquaintance after a tragic loss? Morgan already did that in The Walking Dead. Two unlikely allies stuck together? That was the whole idea of the second half of season four of that series. The big unexpected twist at the end of the episode is also quite predictable.

The first episode offers few surprises in terms of storytelling. We do see interesting characters

But amusing it is. Terry Crews and Olivia Munn are fun actors who do have some chemistry. I mainly know Terry Crews from comedy films and series and here he shows that talent as well. At the same time, he also manages to show the dramatic side of his character well. Munn also knows what to do with her character and Kersti Bryan (Invasion) also has an interesting role.

In Tales of the Walking Dead, you don't really have to expect new ideas and storylines around zombies. But if you really can't get enough of The Walking Dead universe, you'll find this a nice variety with interesting old and new characters.
