Fifth season The Crown will not release for a while

Production on the fifth season of The Crown has not started as of yet, and will not start for quite some time.

The Crown has entered a production break. Production for season five will start next June, which is also the last time the cast will switch. The break in between production was already planned and has nothing to do with the coronavirus. Supposedly, the fifth season of the Netflix series will not premiere until 2022.

In between the second and third season of The Crown, there was a similar event. Claire Foy (Wolf Hall) stopped portraying Queen Elizabeth, Olivia Colman took over. In the fifth season, Imelda Staunton (A Confession) will take over from Colman. It's not just the Queen who's replaced, a lot of the cast will be recast including Princess Margaret.

The fourth season of The Crown is expected to release later this year. The fifth season was originally supposed to be the last, earlier this month it was revealed that there is going to be a sixth.
