The End of the F***ing World - Season 2

This review contains spoilers for the first episode of the second season!

In the beginning of 2018 we were introduced to Alyssa and James. The episodes from The End of the F***ing World's first season were quite short, action-packed and showed us that a series didn't need a whole lot of characters to be interesting. As long as you've got two main characters that have good chemistry and a good motive that drives them, it is almost guaranteed that there is going to be another season. And that's how the second season was released on the fifth of November.

The first season ended with a cliffhanger; a shot James lying on the beach. We, the viewers, were then left with the all too familiar question: is this it, the end of the world? The end of their story? But what is a series without a main character? That is something creator Charlie Covell must have thought at some point too.

“It was a fitting end. A doomed love story. A perfect tragedy. And then I didn’t die” - James

It soon becomes clear that James has survived his gunshot, but he and Alyssa are forced to walk different paths in life. The first episode mainly revolves around the introduction of a new character: Bonnie (Naomi Ackie). Another damaged, furious and numb character, which results in an even greyer and sadder story.

Bonnie is convicted of murder and has been recently released, but she already has another target - or maybe even two - in her sights. But why? The next seven episodes are, just like we're used to, packed with cursing, pitch-black humour but also a strange romance. The duo hit the road, without knowing where they're going, just like in the first season. They are also confronted with several difficult situations, but the chemistry between Alex Lawther and Jessica Barden makes the episodes easy to watch.

Despite it being difficult to decide if there should be a second season for a series that was this well received, I am now of the opinion that they didn't have to make one. James' development into a sophisticated romantic is beautiful, but not something that fits his character. The same applies to the end of this season, this 'end of the world' doesn't really fit the original definition, in my opinion. Every viewer has his or her own expectations for a series, so this season might be worthwhile for some.

Everything considered, the acting in this season is spot-on, but James and Alyssa follow a way to the end of the world that does not suit them. Because the bar was set so high due to the quality of the first season, my expectations for this season may have been too high. It could never achieve the same level as season one. A 6 for the second season of The End of the F***ing World!
