The Handmaid's Tale is een Amerikaanse dramaserie van Hulu. De serie ging in première op 26 april 2017.
The Handmaid’s Tale beschrijft het leven in de Republiek Gilead, tot voor kort de Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Onder het bewind van religieuze fundamentalisten is de Republiek geobsedeerd met voortplanting. Door grootschalige milieuvervuiling zijn de meeste vrouwen onvruchtbaar. Vrouwen die dat nog wel zijn, worden de seksslavinnen van de heersers. Ze moeten baby's produceren voor hun meesters. Wie een kind ter wereld brengt moet het afstaan aan de echtgenote van haar meester. De vrouwen zijn handmaid's. The Handmaid's Tale volgt Offred (voorheen June) die haar man en dochter verloor en nu probeert te vechten voor haar rechten en het terug vinden van haar dochter. Gebaseerd op een boek van Margaret Atwood.

Beautifully filmed, sometimes almost Vermeer-like scenes. Good actors and interesting, but also scary, story. In the beginning I had some trouble with the terribly women-unfriendly scenes, but of course these are intended (as a warning?) I will definitely keep watching, for me one of the better series in recent years.

The concept is terrifyingly realistic, especially in Trump's America. But oh my, it's going slow. Even at 2x the speed you fall asleep and that eternal staring into the camera of “June” is also driving you crazy. Finally canceled season 5 after 2 episodes.

Well, the pace has really picked up. June is in Alaska and 2 minutes later in Gideon. They have stopped at least three seasons in season 6. A number of things are not logical, but necessary for the story. Still, it stands out. A bit of a shame. It could have been better.

A super wonderful series, so beautifully acted, you empathize intensely with the players and quickly get into the story, I can't wait for every other new season... The tension, disbelief, outrage, love, action, mystery... everything is covered in this series. Definitely worth watching!
