House - Season 6

The sixth season of 'House M.D.' begins when Gregory House receives treatment for his hallucinations in Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital. Of course, he soon falls afoul of the manager there, Dr. Darryl Nolan. Eventually, House finishes his treatment, moves in with Wilson and returns to Princeton Hospital. He has lost his license, therefore he isn't head of the department anymore, but merely an advisor.

A large part of sesaon six is about the perils of housemates Wilson and House and the relationship between House and Foreman, who is now head of the department. Furthermore, spouses Dr. Chase and Dr. Cameron still twirl around each other and Dr. Thirteen is dealing with her deadly disease. Dr. Taub spends a couple of episodes ruining his marriage, while in other episodes he tries to save that marriage.

The 21 episodes of the sixth season, again, show very fascinating dilemmas. What should a doctor do when a cruel African dictator with (almost literally) blood on his hands asks for treatment? Is it sensible for a doctor to donate an organ in order to save his patient?

Gregory House is of course again, in addition to a brilliant doctor, also an impossible human being. He hires a private detective in order to keep track of Cuddy, tells everybody a top secret about Wilson and continually manipulates his employees. In between, he tries his best to destroy the fresh relationships of both Cuddy and Wilson. That the viewer still feels sympathy for House is due to the fact that he is almost always right in his, sometimes rude, analyses. Furthermore, the writers of the series didn't make all the main characters one-dimensional, but everybody has good and bad characteristics. Finally, Hugh Laurie portrays the role realistically; the mental and physical pain of House is often written on his face.

This sixth season is a logical sequel to season five and the episodes have the familiar structure of a House-episode. A deadly ill patient is brought in with strange symptoms, tests are done, a few misdiagnoses are made and eventually House has a bright idea which either saves the patient or at least makes the disorder clear. That the series remains surprising is due to the fact that the diseases and patients are often interesting and there are the necessary changes in characters. There was a dramatic end for Dr. Kutner in season five, and in the sixth season Dr. Cameron leaves the series. At the close of the very last season, season eight, Cameron will return one more time.

I was pleasantly surprised by this sixth season. The fourth season was messy, was being ravaged by the writer's strike and only contained 16 episodes and in season five I had to get used to many new characters. Most episodes are fascinating and contain, in addition to the necessary medical drama, also humour. There is, for example, an episode in which House and Wilson bombard each other with practical jokes. The end of the season is another fine episode in which House and Cuddy go to a crane accident with a medical team. When a victim is trapped in rubble, a dramatic choice has to be made. This raises the question whether this will bring House and Cuddy closer or not. A beautiful ending to a fine season of House.
