Are you a repeat watcher?

My name is Jan and I am a series addict.
As a semi-retired person, series are an important part of my life. You could safely say that it is a hobby that has gotten a bit out of hand. Luckily we have a sheepdog. Does Bobby needs a lot of exercise and is a guarantee that I do not turn into a couch potato. Because the scene of the crime is the lounge sofa in the living room and hardcore binging takes a lot of time.

A characteristic of addiction is the need for stock, whether it is cigarettes, alcohol or series. There should always be a ‘stash’ present, a supply for personal use. For me that is a to-watch list with at least five series. And a 'keep the best for last' for extra pleasure.

But what if the source threatens to dry up? Then there is always the possibility of watching the best series again. Actually, series are a fleeting commodity. Music is different. For example, I have listened to Pink Floyd's album Dark Side of the Moon many times. Comparing music with series is like comparing apples and oranges, but a good series can still move me more than once. It helps that I often do not remember the storyline in detail. It may also be that the storyline plays a subordinate role. IMDB has a list of series that are recommended to watch again. I have seen the vast majority.

I will elaborate on a number of series that I have watched at least twice.

Black Mirror
This series paints a sometimes absurd picture of the future. But it is striking that many themes are or have become reality. Take the episode in which the main character reconnects with her deceased boyfriend. That is already possible thanks to AI. It is still in its infancy, but still. Or the episode in which mini-drones are used as a kind of swarm of bees, also closer than many people think. There is also an episode in which one is strongly dependent on assessments by other residents. That is indeed exaggerated, but assessments play an increasingly important role. The series stimulates the imagination.
Black Mirror

Nashville
A must see series for every self-respecting lover of country and americana music. The story plays a subordinate role compared to the music. The special thing is that most of the songs were actually performed by the actors and actresses. The songs are on various playlists in Spotify. I really have to go to Nashville and surroundings to visit a few music cafes or attend a concert at The Grand Ole Opry. I have been to the US a few times and have been introduced to bands and music through the many country radio stations that you never hear here.
Nashville

Peaky Blinders
Birmingham, city of emerging industrialization after the First World War. Meet the Shelby family. In addition to all kinds of criminal activities, they run a café in Birmingham. How convenient, they all do not turn down a good daily drink. This is also due to the terrible First World War in which most family members fought in the trenches. Arthur Shelby in particular struggles with the consequences and that makes him unpredictable. The story, the acting, the scenario and especially the atmosphere result in a series to watch at least twice.
Peaky Blinders

Star Trek: Voyager
In August 2024 I wrote a review about Star Trek: Discovery. In that review I honestly confessed that I am a Trekkie. However, I certainly do not watch all series again. I make an exception for Voyager. It may not even be the best of the Star Trek series, but the story appeals to the imagination. Because Starship Voyager has ended up at an immeasurable distance from Earth, it is questionable whether it can reach Earth again. That offers room to introduce many different species. It is actually a series 'from the old box' because the series ended in 2001, but with 172 episodes you will be busy for a while.
Star Trek: Voyager

Mad Men.
I have seen Mad Men twice and am currently watching this series for the third time. The series paints a picture of the sixties of the twentieth century. The assassination of Kennedy, the Cuba crisis, the rise of the free-spirited hippies. All themes are addressed. It was a time of increasing prosperity, but also of unadulterated racism. What makes the series so beautiful is the atmosphere. This is partly due to the utensils, clothing, cars and architecture. Leading actor Don Draper, played by Jon Hamm, creates a wonderful character of a brilliant advertising executive. A mysterious, idiosyncratic and free-spirited man. All the co-stars deliver a great performance. A series never to be forgotten.
Mad Men

A few more examples without further explanation: Sons of Anarchy, House of Cards (2013), Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Better Call Saul and Succession. I also recently started watching Game of Thrones, but for reasons that are unclear to me I stopped quite quickly.

Current series that I will definitely watch again in the future are Dexter: Original Sin, The Crown, Yellowstone (2018) and the prequels 1883 and 1923.

My list is far from complete, which series are on your shortlist?

Nice column, I wonder who else watches a series 2 or more times and which ones. Personally I don't watch series a second time, my to-watch list is too long for that ;)

Enough series that I have watched multiple times. Sometimes it serves as comfort. Yes, you know how it ends, but sometimes that is nice. I am also busy with my girlfriend watching series that one has seen in the past and the other has not yet. We are currently watching Buffy and Angel. We have had Brooklyn Nine-Nine, A Discovery of Witches and Atlantis (2013) among others. On the schedule are still Ripper Street, White Collar and Da Vinci's Demons.

Unfortunately, I don't have time to rewatch series. When my partner and I first got together, I did. I had already seen some series, but she hadn't, and vice versa. We watched series like Prison Break, 24 and Lost together. One year after the end of Game of Thrones, I watched the entire series a second time, now all episodes in a row. I found the ending easier to digest than the first time (although I would still have chosen many other things if I were the creator). Maybe I'll have more time to rewatch series after I reach retirement age. But then we'll be 20 years further. As an avid series lover, it's something nice to look forward to in any case.

I have seen quite a few series at least twice. This is mainly due to my unbridled collecting mania when it comes to DVDs and BluRays. I watch many series via "alternative channels" when they are released. And if I can buy a DVD box set for a nice price a few years later, I usually can't resist.

Recent examples include His Dark Materials, Doom Patrol, Wednesday, Halo, Vagrant Queen and Star Trek Lower Decks. But there are (many) more.
Boxes I still have to see include Miami Vice (I'm about halfway through it now) and Raised by Wolves.

One series I've watched at least four times in its entirety is Star Trek The Original Series. Yes, the one with Kirk and Spock. Talk about Trekkie :-)

In the past I would easily watch some series twice, but nowadays the selection is so enormous that I simply don't have time for that anymore. There is so much new stuff coming out all the time that I am mainly busy discovering instead of rewatching. I want to catch as much as possible, so the pile of 'still to watch' keeps growing.

Very nice column. I think I have seen more than 50 series multiple times. My list of series that I still want to watch is so long that sometimes I can't make a choice and then I fall back on an existing series. (I'm a loser, the list never gets shorter) I don't call myself a Trekkie but a SF lover, now I'm watching Star Trek Voyager again for the third time. (I watched TV once but never saw everything) A series that I watch almost every year is Babylon 5. I have had this series completely since 2004 (including films and spinoffs), so you can do the math :) I think this is one of the most influential and progressive series ever made. This series was groundbreaking in so many ways, use of CGI, sound, image format and most importantly storytelling.
I recommend that fans of SF who have not seen this series look it up.

Have rewatched quite a few series in recent years. Mainly older series from my childhood (Keromar, Zeppos, Axel Nort) and also some from my teenage years. Supplier of those old series is Eclips TV. Before that there was another channel that rebroadcast some of those old series such as De Bossen van Vlaanderen, Maria Spermalie etc... Eclips has now started broadcasting Little house on the prairie, Bonanza etc.... Bonanza was on my list because I had seen it a few times as a child, but never all episodes. It turned out that Eclips already started somewhere in the middle of the first season and then also regularly skipped episodes. So I quickly dropped out. What I have also rewatched is Medisch centrum west. But due to the large oversupply it is almost impossible to rewatch series. The recording box is constantly around 90 percent and I don't even have subscriptions to streaming services, except for Streamz because that is simply included in my TV package.

I am definitely a re-watcher, if only when a new season of an ongoing series comes out, as a refresher, I often re-watch seasons. (long live the dvd player). :)
Or like I recently read about Angel, I immediately feel like watching it again, nice and familiar and you always look with new eyes. This time I didn't give in because I had just rewatched Supernatural. Of course, the 'to finish/watch list' keeps piling up... I don't think I can do it anymore in this life. haha New series keep coming up..

I hear that quite often, that people find it strange that you watch a series twice or more. I have certainly watched my entire top 10 at least twice.
I'm currently even working on Falling Skies again.

Every time I notice things that I had already forgotten.

I hardly ever rewatch series. There is too much to see and then the choice for something new is quickly made. What I do rewatch are series that I thought I hadn't seen. Then I watch the first episodes and after a while I notice that I have seen it after all. Now that I register everything at MySerie, that happens less and less :) Series that I do like to rewatch more often are home programs. More about that later in a column ;)
