‘Orange is the New Black’ will compete for the next Emmy

After Netflix stormed the Emmy’s with ‘House of Cards’ last year, Netflix is again in the race for one or more Emmy’s. The streaming service will compete for the Emmy for best comedy with ‘Orange is the New Black’; the most praised and valued series of Netflix. This will give Netflix a chance to be nominated for best drama and best comedy.

This decision is very logical. ‘Orange is the New Black’ also competed at the Golden Globes, but that category was full with contenders. Just as ‘House of Cards’ AMC’s ‘Breaking Bad’ can be nominated this year, and it will be very difficult to beat them this year. You can almost say that perhaps the award is already been spoken for.

What is more surprising that HBO might submit the hugely popular ‘True Detective’ as series instead of miniseries. HBO refused to give any comment. This is very surprising because the series is praised by critics and viewers that the awards are up for grabs if ‘True Detective’ will compete as miniseries. Matthew McConaughney can barely elude the figurine. The price for best series is probably more important for HBO than the price for best miniseries.

‘Orange is the New Black’ will probably have to compete with four times winner ABC’s ‘Modern Family’, HBO’s ‘Veep’ and CBS’s ‘Big Bang Theory’. A spokesperson of Netflix stated the following: “Jenji’s vision is without compromise and despite of the fact that the show is handling and discussing real problems, it is done with humor. ‘Orange is the New Black’ is mixing comedy with drama in her one hour episodes and that goes against all simple categorization.”

By placing ‘House of Cards’ in different categories the two shows of Netflix do not have to compete against each other. That fate is awaiting Showtime with her two new drama series; ‘Ray Donavan’ and ‘Masters of Sex’, they will have to go up against two times nominee ‘Homeland’. HBO could even start the campaign for four series; ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘The Newsroom’, ‘Boardwalk Empire’ en maybe ‘True Detective’.

The Emmy’s have nominated one-hour comedies in the past before. ‘Ally McBeal’ from FOX won the price in 1999, ‘Desperate Housewives’ from ABC was nominated in 2005 and ‘Glee’ from FOX was nominated in 2010 and 2011. The lead actress has more chance now than ever to be nominated for best actress in a comedy since Tina Fey (‘30 Rock’) and Laura Dern (‘Enlightened’) are gone.

And despite of the fact that he only appeared in six episodes of ‘Homeland’, the Emmy winner of 2012 Damian Lewis will also compete in the category of best male lead actor. This prevents him from going up against Jon Voight who won a Golden Globe for best male in a supporting role in January.
