De serie is met een backdoor-pilot geïntroduceerd in The Vampire Diaries op 24 april 2013. In de backdoor-pilot keerde Klaus terug naar het Franse deel in New Orleans, waar vele bovennatuurlijke vormen samenkomen. Een stad welke Klaus eeuwen geleden heeft helpen bouwen en waar hij herenigd wordt met zijn duivelse protegé Marcel.

The Originals is the sequel series of The Vampire Diaries that centers on the Mikaelsons, the very first vampires. So that means they are the toughest of their kind. The series is not just about vampires, as there are other supernatural creatures, such as werewolves and witches. There is a man named Niklaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) and he is the only original hybrid. That means he is half vampire and half werewolf with witch genes. In The Vampire Diaries, he had a one-night stand with a she-wolf named Hayley Marshall (Phoebe Tonkin). Eventually we find out that she is pregnant with Niklaus Mikaelson's daughter. Apparently their daughter turns out to be a tribride (werewolf, vampire, witch). She's the only one of her kind unless she wants to have children. Season 1 through Season 4 were really fun. We were also told how and by whom created the werewolf curse. To be fair, season 5 didn't really feel like the originals anymore. The series finale was also ill-conceived. What the writers could do was turn The Hollow into Elijah Mikaelson (Daniel Gillies) and kill him so Hope and Klaus can get to know each other.

I thought they were already very good in TVD, so I think it is very deserved that they now have their own series.

Series started well and despite the fact that there is always something exciting going on, the series can no longer hold my attention. I'm always doing something different in between and that's a bad sign. Didn't even watch S1. The only part that did fascinate me was the Elijah/Hayley part, but that too is getting a bit boring.
